It didn’t help that over half of these churches were named St. Stephen. It continued across four countries – Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Hungary.

After a while, architectural styles – Romanesque versus Medieval, Baroque versus Gothic – ran together in a blur.

Churches that took hundreds of years to build or had been partially rebuilt under a new ruler often contained aspects of multiple styles.

On the last day, we pleaded with the ship’s captain, “Please no more churches!” Ah, but just one more…
